Two centuries ago, as natural science replaced religion as the source of the Western world’s wisdom, we decided for the first time in human memory to exclude ​the metaphysical from our scope of reality. The very narrow beam of scientific light we started shedding on existence tolerated no intuition, no divine meaning, no ​magic, and certainly no soul.

This worship of mathematical exactitude, with its taboos, its self-referential nature, and its refusal to address the very possibility that it may go wrong or that there ​might be more, is plainly nothing short of its own religion.

Dogmatically deprived of our nocturnal half, we went mad.

Both our world and our selves are complex and ever-changing. Both possess abyssal reaches, which abide by primordial structures that far exceed the scope of ​laboratory analysis. Framed by its protocol’s blinders, the single-minded modern approach to everything – mind, morality, reality itself – lacks a tremendous deal of ​depth-perception.

Yet depth is everything to wisdom.

We get to the bottom of things, love from the bottom of our hearts, and know things deep down. We even under-stand. Hence the very concept of depth ​psychology. There exists an inherent, universal human knowledge that the most essential truth resides below any matter’s measurable surface.

And it does so not dissected, but whole, and alive.
